High seas (Glenn Kaino and Dave Sitek): Invisible Embrace: AF Projects Los Angeles

8 December 2022 - 31 January 2023
Overview

Glenn Kaino and Dave Sitek's collaboration High Seas will stage the installation "Invisible Embrace" at AF Projects in Hollywood, opening December 8, 2022, in their West Coast debut.

High seas is an American art and music collective founded by artists Glenn Kaino and David Sitek.

High Seas manifesto reads: "A compass spins with the magnetism of humanity. The ship sways back and forth, sailing on the sea of language but trapped in the time machine of a palindrome. Going nowhere and everywhere at the same time. There is no north star, just stars guiding our way through a constellation of concerns. In a space, in space, owned by no one. A pirate utopia outside the rule of law, inhabited only by invisible assassins cut from diamonds. X means "we were here." You are now in the HIGH SEAS."

Glenn Kaino is known internationally for his expansive vision and activist-minded practice, which encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, performance, monumental public art, theatrical production, and a forthcoming feature film. Glenn is a conceptual artist, experienced entrepreneur, and Emmy-Award winning creator who has lead major digital brands such as the Oprah Winfrey Network, Napster, and Universal Music Group/Farmclub. He has had exhibitions at museums around The world, including the High Museum of Atlanta, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, alongside being selected by the U.S Department of State to represent the United States in the 13th Cairo Biennale. He most recently co-directed With Drawn Arms, a film about his collaboration with activist/athlete Tommie Smith on Starz, and produced both the off-broadway and film version of In & Of Itself, which is now a hit special on Hulu.

Since landing atop NME's "Future 50" list, TV on the Radio founder David Andrew Sitek has produced Jane's Addiction, Kelis, Weezer, Scarlett Johansson, Pussy Riot, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Group Love, Karen O and Willie Nelson while collaborating with Blondie, Jay-Z, Run the Jewels, David Byrne and Solange, landing a Grammy with Jay-Z & Beyonce's The Carters. He's arguably the most versatile and indefinable musical talent of his generation, which, naturally, led to something as audacious as Forest for the Trees. Before seeding the early 2000s with a sound and vision soon borrowed/ bought/sold as "Brooklyn Made," Sitek trained in the visual arts as a painter, photographer, and filmmaker.
