For their first exhibition in their new Los Angeles space, Louise Alexander Gallery/AF Projects will present a solo show with legendary photographer Guy Bourdin unveiling iconic works shot in the USA between the 1950s and 1980s including personal archives coinciding his first exhibition in New York in 1956, early black and white editorials published for Vogue France in the 1960s, to the distinctive colour editorial and advertising imagery such as the 1976 Bloomingdales lingerie catalogue which represents a highpoint in late 20th century fashion photography.

This exhibition highlights Bourdin’s relationship with the United States which began in 1956 when as a young photographer at Vogue Paris he took an end of year trip to New York in preparation for an exhibition of his paintings and drawings at Peter Deitsch Gallery. During this time Bourdin visited an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, a retrospective of Balthus who plays influence to Bourdin’s mysterious narratives and geometric compositions.

In 1976, Bloomingdales commissioned Bourdin to shoot a photo-series mail order lingerie catalogue ‘Sighs & Whispers’ representing his unconventional use of colour, cropping, unrealistic settings and a cinematic portraiture that are integral to Bourdin’s practice.
