Paris Photo 2017 – Grand Palais
November 9-12 2017

Representing the estate, Louise Alexander Gallery for its second participation to Paris Photo at the Grand Palais will present iconic works from famous French artist Guy Bourdin with the intention to take visitors on a deeper journey into Guy Bourdin’s extraordinary work.

Using fashion photography as his medium, Bourdin sent out a message, exploring the realms between the absurd and the sublime. Famed for his suggestive narratives and surreal aesthetics, he radically broke conventions of commercial photography with relentless perfectionism and emotional charged energy.
A major highlight will be the ‘mise en abyme’, featuring unseen and iconic colour prints of images repeated within themselves often highlighting the Polaroids Bourdin used to plan his entire campaign.
For the first time, originals of the retrospective Polaroids will be exhibited alongside the colour prints, the only time they will ever be seen together at an art fair.
The Polaroids present something very personal, precious and emotional. The exhibition reflects on black- and-white photography at a time when colour is undergoing so many digital changes.
Man Ray provided Bourdin a model of total artistic freedom, changing the course of fashion photography influencing a host of contemporary artists, photographers and filmmakers along the way. It is without ques- tion, that Guy Bourdin is now seen in the appropriate context of contemporary art.
Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) was first and foremost an image-maker who never seized to learn and explore. The finality of his work was to express himself by pushing his creative boundaries. Mentored by Man Ray, he avoided the limelight, focusing strictly on the creation of arresting pictures.
A retrospective of ‘Guy Bourdin: Image Maker; will be exhibited at The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin between the 30 November 2017 to May 2018.
