Louise Alexander 画廊
Arik Levy 个展
-DESIGN SHANGHAI 2015 –
It has been over 15 years since artist Arik Levy began investigating the relationship between humans, social codes, nature, feelings and science – each a constant interpretation of the links, tension and content that results with a remarkable ensemble of statements.
In the upcoming solo show at Design Shanghai, Louise Alexander Gallery will showcase works by internationally renowned artist and designer, Arik Levy who has gained global recognition with his contemporary art and collectable design. Best known publicly for his sculptures, such as his signature Rock pieces, his installations and collectible design, Arik Levy nevertheless feels that “the world is about people, not objects.” Considering himself now more of a “feeling” artist, Arik Levy continues to contribute substantially to our interior and exterior milieu, with a body of work including public sculpture, as well as complete environments that can be adapted for multi use.
Not without reference to his past body of works, the juxtaposition of these new and past oeuvres enhances the facts that Levy’s works are not only an evolution of his own doing but also unwritten formulas of past-future thinking and involvement in everyday life experiences -works in constant evolution of a never-ending process.
Arik Levy’s first exhibition at Design Shanghai will present a wide range of collectible design works, like a trail of landmarks in his autobiography alongside his signature Rock pieces, light sculptures, installations and other works.
FractalCloud is a light sculpture, an art piece with no beginning and no end. LED components stretch in every direction filling the space with virtual lines, and the light becomes a sort of fabric that can be almost loomed and constructed in endless combinations. The radical aspect of all its components, wires, power units and connections, give this piece an aspect of industrial art. Each FractalCloud is a unique piece.
The RockStone series involves the notion of relationship, power and relativity between people, people and nature, people and space as well as nature and super-nature. These slightly over-sized figures suggest the physical confrontation, the force contained in the emotional and physical space it captures. Reflections stream around the space. Regardless of its location, both in nature or in a domestic space, the piece will reconstruct a new vision/visual of its surroundings, and a vision the human eye cannot see by itself. Its appearance also gives the impression that you can just pick it up and throw it at a distance. Evidently, when standing side by side to it you feel its energy and realise it would not be possible.
The RockLibrary is a reflection on Arik Levy’s signature piece, the Rock, applied to contemporary spaces. The Rock is a meteorite, standing as the juxtaposition between man and nature. A non－geological growth. It is a hard-soft piece, an object, multifunctional or with no function. When made of mirror-polished metals, it will disappear and appear by reflecting our surroundings and us. Planted in nature, it looks like it comes from an advanced civilization. Placed indoors, it seems to be stemming from nature itself, a nature we almost know. The RockLibrary embodies the encounter between the sculptural and the functional. It brings culture to a room in an almost raw yet refined way, with books inserted into the Rock’s shelters.
Levy’s RockShelves seem rather elementary; an assortment of stainless steel rocks serve as the base for a set of wooden shelves. The work conveys a sense of randomness, as if a bunch of rocks and shelves were simply collected and assembled to fulfil a function. Instinctively we seek causality: we extract meaning, particularly when confronted with what seems to be straightforward actions.
Mercury emphasises mysterious and abstract meanings and evocations, achieved with the innovative use of silvered glass. “Mercury” is a series of very peculiar mirrors, which will be introduced as a wall installation during the fair in March.
During Design Shanghai, Arik Levy will show another facet of his creativity and confirms his talent as one of the most prolific artists and designers of his generation, with a body of work encompassing design, sculpture, film-making, painting and installations.
